Read this before you light anything

Storage. Keep the boxes in a cool, dry place away from the kitchen, the pooja lamp and any electrical point. Do not store them under a bed or on top of a wardrobe near a light fitting. Keep the whole stock in one place, closed, and take out only what you are about to light.
Do
- Light crackers in an open space, well away from buildings, dry grass, vehicles and overhead wires.
- Keep two buckets of water and a bucket of sand within arm's reach before you light anything.
- Let one adult do the lighting. Everyone else — children included — watches from a safe distance.
- Light at arm's length, using an agarbatti or a long taper, never a match held close.
- Wear close-fitting cotton clothes. Loose synthetic dupattas and nylon catch fire fast.
- Read the label on the box. Aerials, shots and rockets each have their own safe distance.
- Soak every spent cracker in water before you throw it away.
Don't
- Never re-light a cracker that did not go off. Wait 15 minutes, then soak it in water.
- Never hold a cracker in your hand once it is lit — sparklers included, for small children.
- Never light crackers inside a house, on a balcony, in a stairwell or in a narrow lane.
- Never keep the stock box open beside you while lighting. One spark ends the evening.
- Never put crackers in a pocket. Body heat and friction are enough to set some of them off.
- Never let children handle atom bombs, paper bombs, rockets or repeating shots.
- Never point a rocket or an aerial at a person, an animal, a window or a thatched roof.
If someone is burned
- Put the burn under cool running water for at least 15 minutes. Cool water, not ice.
- Do not apply toothpaste, ghee, oil, butter, ink or turmeric. They trap the heat and make the wound harder to treat.
- Do not break blisters. Cover loosely with a clean, dry cloth.
- For an eye injury, do not rub or rinse with anything but clean water, and go to hospital immediately.
- For anything larger than a palm, or any burn on the face, hands or over a joint, go to hospital. Call 108 for an ambulance.
Green crackers and the law
We stock only green crackers, in line with Supreme Court directions. Where your town sets a permitted window for bursting crackers, please keep to it — and spare a thought for elderly neighbours, infants, people with asthma, and street animals, who have no way to get away from the noise.
